Image I made that is of a fake book cover. The concept is about being attached to something that has abandoned you, I guess it's my way of trying to empathize with people who are born on soil that they call home, yet their country abandons them. Printing out dark images is the hardest thing to do, with the cost and the hell of going to the print lab is probably the worst thing on Earth. Hope sall good.

This was my submission for the MICA halloween poster contest. It wasn't chosen likely due to my stubbornness of not actually having any Star Wars characters in the image. All of the characters I drew were implied from the characters I drew, I just didn't want to have another Star Wars fan art thing circulating out there. I remember being really frustrated as I worked on this piece. Anyway hope you like it.

Since I'm too lazy to upload any real illustrations to this blog, here is a half hour sketch in photoshop. I've been doing a lot of linear drawings in my sketchbooks and wanted to repeat this in the way I paint. It's interested limiting my colors and using the pressure sensitivity sparingly.

I got the scholarship to the illustration master class this summer and really I can't say much besides thanks to Cathy and Arnie Fenner for offering this scholarship. I'm incredibly excited to have the opportunity to study under so many amazing illustrators and painters. I still can't believe that this happened.

As far as illustration goes. There are new things coming up next week after finals are over.

Good things have been happening! Turns out I didn't throw $90 down the drain. I have a lot of work I've been sitting on that I'm not quite ready to show, and I want to make my blogger more accessible like y's. But that also means I'm going to be going through lots of yelling at my laptop for not accepting the coding and whatnot.

Also I'm going on the Mary Kate and Ashley Dream Vacation™ in Iceland this week and I can't wait. I'm working on a booklet and an accordion foldout as promotional material that is probably going to feature icelandic landscapes in them.

I had a really long weekend of working on this poster and my body is physically drained. I took a break of doing serious illustration to see if I can draw the figure from my head and draw some futuristic soldiers and robots. It was a nice hour long break of drawing stuff for fun, I might turn this into something real one day.

For some reason I don't feel like uploading new work to my blog anymore, maybe it's because I'm waiting until I have a proper website to show my new stuff. Anyway, here is one new thing I've finished. I have 2 others from the summer done but I'm really waiting to finish the third so I can upload like a 3 pack. You wont be seeing a whole lot of concept work for a while (maybe a good thing?) so here is the first of my thesis pieces. It's about the concept of someones digital identity replacing their physical. Internet based identities have always perplexed me. It's easy to assume it's more detrimental, that people are uploading a fraudulent identity and masking themselves from the real world. But the opposite is equally true, where it's also much easier to show who you truly are online than it is in the real world. So this is what I wanted to explore with the piece, how the line is blurred. I hope it reads decently, I could go on about every nuance and metaphor in the narrative but I already paid you 50$ to look at my blog and your probably not reading this.

I've been doing lots and lots of drawing this summer, my sketchbook is nearly full up, ideas of illustrations in the back of my head, thinking a lot about how to word my thesis proposal, and of course warming up with some concept art. It's good and bad: Good because I'm getting a lot of my portfolio for concept art done before thesis begins, Bad because I really need to finish up the illustrations I've been working on.

The above two designs are the result of a process I've been thinking of for a while, I finally jumped forward with the idea and I think the experiment sort of worked. Being so conflicted with how I want to work it's finally nice to have some things finally coming out of the woodwork. The technique involves lots of scribbling, lots of masking, and lots of editing; I'm still trying to master it. Likewise, I've been really figuring things out with the directions I want my illustration to go, both conceptually (which I might add that I am really excited about) and technically.

It's nice to finally have some vehicles in the old portfolio.

I'm not one for having all of my work be of the same thing, so I thought it would be a nice contrast from the mechanical vehicles to some fantasy environments. Now all I need to do is some lifestyle illustrations to balance it out. The above two are at a level of finish that I think is presentable, but I'd like to keep working on them. It may not be for a while, so here they are before I forget.

Can't focus enough to work on prolonged work today, so here are some sketches I did practicing different styles of work. Trying to develop a quicker more graphic style and possibly a quick style of digital rendering. I realized that I'm not happy with any of the concept artwork I've done ever so I'm trying new methods of brush techniques. I've also been doing a lot of experimental type of work in my sketchbook, but I can't be bothered to scan that in.

I've finally managed to get a figure to stand on a white background without it looking like crap.
These are a few characters I've been working on for a few days, there still needs to be touch ups on them but I'm tired of working on concept art for now and desperately want to finish the illustrations I've been working on. I've been working on 6 things at once while constantly sketching ideas for more conceptual work for my thesis. And oddly enough, I think it's a really effective way for me to work since I get restless very easily.

I don't really have any significant character pieces for my concept art portfolio so after I've put the finishing touches on these and finish two other I've been working on that should be about half of it, and hopefully I wont have to worry about doing any characters for a while. After spending two straight days of staring at these I really need to get back to finishing up the illustrations I've been working on so hopefully the people watching will like them.

Here is a quick update: This is for a local show in hopes to send money to japan after it's horrible disaster recently. I hope to visit japan someday as the culture is fascinating. I have 3 large scale personal illustration in the works, so I wont be touching concept art for a little while, and I have a bunch of ideas resonating for watercolor paintings and different ways to approach digital. I'm trying to figure out how to do this speed painting thing, I'm figuring out speed painting isn't really how well you can paint rather than how many tricks you know to get the job done. Don't be fooled by speed painting, it's not a method to impress you as some might have you believe, but it's a method in getting a decent concept down as efficiently as possible using brush techniques.

The first one is oil and the second one is acrylic. Both were done for my Figure and Ground class, the latter is the final. I had to do some hefty oil paintings that I put a lot of time into, one of which I can't upload because it's a few feet wide and I don't have a decent enough camera to do the image justice. I learned a lot both conceptually and technically, skills that I want to put into my illustrations to make them more my own. Another goal that I think I achieved in the class was to make oil and acrylic seamless throughout my work. Now that I got that figured out I'm going to try to do some more challenging work over the summer.

I did this a while ago and never got around to posting it. This was for a bus ad of some sort, we had to take a poem then illustrate it. Mine was about stream of conscious thinking. I kind of liked how it turned out. Secondly, I found out that I got some money for the Society of Illustrators competition... I really didn't see that one happening seeing as there was a lot of really good work probably more qualified for money but.. I'll take it! Let's hope this is a foreshadowing for some more money to be coming my way.

Pretty awesome day, surprising on all ends. Between sitting around playing Minecraft and going out to eat chinese food, in the mail I received my Maryland state ID. I've been 21 for a month now so you can understand my excitement. Also flying on planes wont be a bitch either. I went to the DMV two days ago so having it delivered so quickly was a great surprise. Secondly, Yelena and I both got into the Society of Illustrators student competition this year! Along with other well deserved winners from MICA.

On another note, walking back from the chinese restaurant I saw a sign around the Superfresh area in Baltimore that looked like "BICA," I made a joke that it was MICA's competitor school: "Baltimore Institute College of Art."

Search Engine Optimization

After many long hours I finished my first illustration for http://theusmangroup.com/ which is a design firm located in chicago. You can find it on the cover of their website. It was based on a series of articles about Search Engine Optimization, which I didn't completely know was but luckily my best friend happens to work in that field.
They decided to go with my mockup which has the text.

The whole thing is two explorers that are kind rooting out key words in an infinite space of a google results page.

Final Portrait: Drawing from the tablet

I finally got a big mirror and I am working on my final portrait for our first assignment.

I've gotten a few questions about my process so I guess I can explain some things for anyone that would like to know. But most of it is obvious, first thing is first start big go small. I use the feather brush to put in the shapes and get the tones about right. It's a lot of push and pull I block things in and out. Lighting and composition is key, at the first stages of the drawing don't get attached to it, you have to be willing to scrape thing off and make adjustments, make sure all of the proportions and tones are correct, then you can worry about the details later. This is the point of the peice where I am going to start to go into detail, the light from the sun is gone so I'm going to have to work more tomorrow.

hour and a half worths of concepting, I wanted to get a feel of doing some quick concepting rather than doing more finished paintings. It was a fun exercise and to help myself think more quickly.

I was thinking of one of my favorite games of all time "The Elder of Scrolls IV: Oblivion". The thing I am interested in that I thought the game really lacked though was a distinct variety of environments, it was a little too "realistic" as far as most of the landscape goes. I want a free roaming world with a giant mountain someone can explore, or deep into a dessert or woods with massive trees, nothing really new but still fun.

This is a study for my 'drawing from the tablet class'. I'm trying to get better at observation and utilizing my strokes. This was a practice to help give me a direction of where to go stylistically. 3 hour drawing from life, one layer, monochromatic, and hard and feather brush only.

UPDATE: I decided to do another self portrait real fast right before class, it's only an hour long study but I can feel that my hand and eye are merging into a stronger relationship. I am trying to draw as fast as I can see. I'm going to be doing tons of observational drilling this semester.

It's neither a painting of construction nor a speed painting, I used these words as to what the picture resembles. Construction grounds was just a name that popped up in my head even though it's more of a city scape and I don't particularly try to have any of my work be speed paintings, I just like to work things to certain points. So far I put about 3 hours into this piece, it's not done yet but I feel like I'm getting a better grasp of atmosphere and my own aesthetic taste.

Blade Runner Final

These are my final pieces for illustration 1 with Daniel Krall, I am pretty happy with how these turned out. It was a really great day for critiques because most of my classmates brought in really sweet work, definitely learned a lot from working from these and looking at my peers work. The most enriching feeling is spending every waking hour for the last week working on these turning them in and still feel excited about making more work. There is so much illustration to see and do I don't understand how anyone couldn't be excited about all of the things going on.

I really love moleskins at the moment, they have the most amazing paper that interacts well with the line quality of ball point pens and graphite. Not so well with wet media though. Most recent illustration 1 work. We had to take a monster and modernize it. I chose this monster called a Nokken where this underwater monster with yellow eyes and seaweed for hair would come out of the water as an attractive member of the opposite sex and lure the victim in and eat them. My modern version of this is a priest, an attractive member of society or at least one that people do not question and indoctrinates their victims.

The top piece is kind of inspired by Nicolas Bouvier and the bottom is a character that would have a name like Gyger or something, maybe Killian. I'm going to finish the bottom one up pretty soon.

I usually sketch a lot more on photoshop than I make finished work. These are a two very quick (about a half an hour) atmospheric environment sketches, I was also playing around with some custom brushes.

Alien World

Some Alien Drawings I did over the summer, these were really to benchmark how well I could create an atmosphere from my head.
